When I started putting Gutter & Spine together, I knew the first book had to be something a little bit special.

I went back and forth on about four different titles before eventually realising that one of them had everything I wanted from our first pick.

We Called Them Giants.

Kieron Gillen tells an amazing story about trust and grief in a newly apocalyptic world, with plenty of mystery around what exactly has happened and why.

Then we have the artwork. Stephanie Hans ties it all together with some of the best artwork I've ever seen. There are pages where I genuinely forgot I was supposed to be reading it and just ended up taking it all in. It really is that good.

It's also a complete story in one beautiful hardcover. No previous reading, no huge series to commit to, just one self-contained story from beginning to end.

If this is your first ever graphic novel, you're in for a treat.
